Physical and Chemical SPF: What's the diff?

The sun is no laughing matter, especially when it comes to our skin’s health! Time and time again, we hear about how harshly the sun can damage our skin, and that the best way to prevent that from happening is by applying on sunscreen. Did you know that sun protection comes in two different types? Here’s the low down on all you need to know, plus how to choose a good sunblock for you!

UVA and UVB rays are the ones that cause havoc on the skin! UVA rays causes premature ageing, wrinkles and age spots, while UVB rays cause the physical burning that leads to sunburn. Both of these can cause skin cancer, yikes! The two different types of SPF (sun protection factor) available to prevent skin damage are chemical and physical sunscreens. Chemical sunscreen, also known as organic sunscreens contain chemical compounds that absorb UV rays, transforms it into heat, then releases and scatters it. Chemical sunscreens are usually more liquid-like in texture, giving the skin a lotion feel that makes it ideal for everyday use. However, you’ll need to wait a little bit before heading out as they take 15-20 minutes to activate, and they may not be able to cover the broad spectrum that protects the skin from both UVA and UVB rays without other additions ingredients.

Physical sunscreens, on the other hand, offers both UVA and UVB protection, creating a barrier on the skin that filters out the UV rays, deflecting and scattering them to prevent skin damage. They don’t irritate the skin, and are safe to be used on babies and pregnant mothers too, working instantly as soon as the product is applied on. However, sometimes they may feel a little heavy and leave an unsightly white cast if the formula is thick. It also requires more frequent application as it can be rubbed off or removed by water and sweat easily.

To play it safe though, we definitely recommend getting yourself a physical sunscreen as it offers both UVA and UVB protection, the most important point of all to keep your skin protected!
